WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE DR OMOWUNMI BAKARE, PRESIDENT MEDICAL WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (MWAN) LAGOS STATE BRANCH AT THE SCIENTIFIC SESSION OF THE 21ST BIENNIAL CONFERENCE OF THE ASSOCIATION AT MRC AUDITORIUM, LASUTH, IKEJA.
It gives me a great pleasure to welcome you all to the first scientific session of the 21st Biennial Conference/ Annual General Meeting and Investiture of the 22nd President of our dear association, Prof Funmi Ajose. The theme of the conference is Advancing the heath of Nigerians in the 21st Century: Beyond the Rhetoric, the sub-themes include – The school as a health promoting institution, Intersectoral Synergy: Means to reduce healthcare costs and Improving the well-being of the healthcare workforce: Mitigating against brain drain.
The activities for today shall be abstract presentations, panel discussions on the School as a Health Promoting Institution a team of technocrats with expertise in school health management have been assembled to do justice to the topic. The main lecture of the day shall be delivered by an experienced medical administrator per excellence, Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, he Chief Medical Director of LASUTH Ikeja. The title of the lecture, Improving the well-being of the Healthcare workforce: Mitigating against brain drain, is apt and very relevant in the present state of the healthcare delivery system in the country.
Ladies and gentlemen, May I briefly intimate you with the aims and objectives of our dear association, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) – is a professional, apolitical, non-sectarian non-governmental organization of fully registered medical doctors and dental surgeons in Nigeria. MWAN is affiliated to the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) which was founded in New York, United States of America in 1919 – MWIA is said to be the oldest medical association in continuous existence. MWAN is also affiliated to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
It’s motto is “Matris Animo Curant” meaning “Healing with the Love of a Mother”. As medical women, we are committed to promoting women’s health, improving professional development and personal well-being of our members and also increasing the influence of women in all aspects of medical profession. Our main aim is to expand the role of women in the achievement and maintenance of health throughout Nigeria.
Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, during the 2017 -2019 biennium, the executive implemented community impactful programmes such as school health programme, commemoration of global world health days, community health screening including breast and cervical cancer screening campaign, public enlightenment campaigns in the newsprint, electronic and social media. The star project of the biennium is the renovation of MWAN Centre with total roof replacement and other body works. The centre now renamed – Well Woman Centre, is geared to provide a holistic wellness package for all women health concerns. Such services shall include breast and cervical cancer screening, blood pressure and blood glucose check, health education and information, counseling on menopause, domestic violence and child welfare services.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am elated at the quality of our resource persons and convinced that the theme and sub-themes shall be adequately discussed. I sincerely want to thank you the Chairman, for accepting to chair the scientific section, the panelists and the main speaker for today – Prof Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, thank you immensely. My esteemed elders, my hardworking executive committee, colleagues, friends and families, I appreciate you all. I also thank the members of the Local Organizing Committee ably led by Dr Funmi Ige for the meticulous planning and execution of the various aspect of the conference.
